To "The ugly slave"

In youth, not knowing the taste of sorrow,
I loved to ascend the storeyed towers,
I loved to ascend the storeyed towers,
And, to fashion new verses, I made myself speak of sorrow.

But now, having known all the taste of sorrow,
I should speak of it but refrain,
I should speak of it but refrain,
Instead, I say: "A cool day, a fine Autumn".

- Hsin Ch'i-Chi (1140-1207)
