Fluctuat nec mergitur

Paris, November 16, 2015 -- A collective of artists paints a street mural on hoardings in the Place de la République, not far from the sites where some of the attacks took place on Friday night.
The letters spell out the Latin motto that has appeared on the seal of the City of Paris since at least the 14th century: "It is tossed by the waves, but it does not sink."

The words refer to the small Seine river boat that serves as the symbol on the city's arms.
As has been the case so many times in its nearly 2,500-year history, Paris now finds itself in very rough water. Fluctuat nec mergitur.

After days of darkness to mourn the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks, the Eiffel Tower lights up in blue, white and red — the colors of the French flag.
