My response to an American friend of mine, who feels that President Obama "has not made America respectable in the eyes of the world" and that when visiting Hiroshima later this month "he may not say the words of apology but his actions will tell of disrespect of the sailor boys killed on the USS Arizona."

Obama to Be First Sitting President to Visit Hiroshima

WASHINGTON — President Obama will become the first sitting American president to visit Hiroshima, Japan, the White House announced on Tuesday, making a fraught stop this month at the site where the United States used an atomic bomb at the end of World War II.
The visit, hotly debated in the White House for months as the president planned his coming trip to Vietnam and Japan, carries weighty symbolism for Mr. Obama, who is loath to be seen as apologizing for that chapter in American history.
“He will not revisit the decision to use the atomic bomb at the end of World War II,” Benjamin J. Rhodes, his deputy national security adviser for strategic communication, said in a blog post on Medium. “Instead, he will offer a forward-looking vision focused on our shared future.” (The New York Times, may 10, 2016)

In the whole of Europe there is no battlefield more blood-stained than Verdun, where in 1916 nearly 800,000 French and German soldiers were killed or wounded in an inconclusive fight over a few square miles of territory. On 22 September 1984, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl met the French president François Mitterrand at the Douaumont cemetery in Verdun. In front of the charnel house in which the remains of 150,000 French soldiers rest, the two leaders stood side by side in the rain. Mitterrand extended a hand to Kohl, which the latter held in what became a symbolic gesture of historical reconciliation.
